Originally a pair of farm workers cottages, built during the Victorian period, Grove Farm Cottages are set in a very peaceful location at the beginning of a narrow leafy lane among the arable fields of our farm. The holiday cottage side was sympathetically renovated during 2003 after standing empty for many years and the other cottage, renovated in 2012, is now occupied by a family member. The farm buildings and farm house are situated about 1/2 a mile further on from the cottages, down the lane.
The farm is a working arable farm of 1500 acres, growing wheat, barley and oilseed rape. We have no livestock, only the ducks on the duck ponds in the farmyard!
John & Richard run the farming business, assisted by John's daughter Claire, who has been working on the farm since 2011. You will probably see them working in the nearby fields at busy times of the year or passing by the cottage in the Land Rover. Many children who stay at the cottage, love to watch the combine harvester or our large caterpiller tractor at work.
Johns wife Sue (that's me!) deals with the farm office administration, plus all the holiday cottage side of things.
After successfully letting the cottage through Hoseasons Holidays for 11 years, we decided in 2013 to market the cottage ourselves. We contacted Visit England for an assessment and were graded 4* in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 - scoring 100% in the cleaning section every year.
We wanted to join the Visit England scheme (the English Tourist Board), as it is an internationally recognised brand. Being assessed each year, it gives our customers reassurance of the standard and cleanliness of our cottage. (You can check the validity of our listing on the 'Quality in Tourism' website: www.qualityintourism.com - just enter Ilketshall St Margaret in the search box and our cottage listing will be shown).
You will also receive written confirmation and invoices from our Company by post - not just emails - and I am always happy to speak to you regarding any bookings or queries about the cottage by telephone.
We are situated on the edge of the village of Ilketshall St Margaret, but close to the cottage are several footpaths, which lead across fields and tracks to the other Ilketshall villages and also the South Elmhams. Each of these unique villages have a small Church and many also have a village green or Common. The local single track roads are ideal for cycling and are all signposted with cycling routes through 'The Saints' countryside including the nearby Godric Way.
The cottage itself is well equipped and appointed to a high standard, with good quality furnishings throughout. The cosy sitting room is just the place to curl up on a cold winters day with a good book or dvd. Games, books/magazines and tourist information/maps are all provided to make your stay complete. The kitchen is fitted in farmhouse style, with good quality appliances and utensils. Teatowels, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc are provided. The double bedroom has an ensuite bathroom/wc, whilst the twin room has an ensuite shower room/wc.
All linen and bedding is included, together with bath and hand towels.
Electricity and full oil central heating is also included.
Outside a barbecue and garden furniture on the patio are available for your enjoyment during the warm summer months and there is ample parking for cars. A small shed at the rear of the cottage can be used for storage of up to 2 bikes.
Whilst staying at the cottage, watch out for the local wildlife. We have a pair of resident barn owls who love to fly along the ditch lines beside the cottage in the evening, looking for their supper. You may also see the hares dancing in the nearby fields and the deer in the nearby 'Spring wood'.
Being right on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk, the cottage offers easy touring for both these counties, the beautiful Norfolk Broads and the unspoilt East Anglian coast. With four historic market towns nearby, there are many delightful independant shops to browse around, including antique and craft shops. Situated just down the road from the cottage, is Bungay's indoor swimming pool with waterslide and gym. St Peters Hall Brewery, with its restaurant, bar and shop is in the next village about 2 miles away. There are several country pubs within 5 miles, including the Rumburgh Buck which often has Folk Music at the weekends and a regular Morris Dancing team.
What more could you wish for!
